Achilles Tendinopathy
Achilles tendinopathy is a condition affecting the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel. It commonly causes pain, stiffness or tenderness around the back of the ankle, particularly during walking, running or after periods of rest.
It often develops when the tendon is exposed to more load than it is currently able to tolerate, for example after a sudden increase in running or exercise. With the right management, the tendon can usually adapt and become stronger over time.
Common Symptoms
Typical symptoms include pain or stiffness around the Achilles tendon, particularly first thing in the morning or at the beginning of activity. Running, jumping or prolonged walking may aggravate symptoms, and the tendon can sometimes feel tender or thickened.
Possible Causes
Achilles tendinopathy is often associated with changes in how much load the tendon is being asked to tolerate. Increasing running distance or intensity, returning to activity after a break or changing training patterns can all contribute.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
Rehabilitation commonly focuses on progressively strengthening the calf and Achilles tendon so it can better tolerate the activities you want to perform. Your physiotherapist can help manage training loads and develop a programme based on your symptoms and goals.
