Carpal Tunnel Pain

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through a narrow space in the wrist called the carpal tunnel. This can cause symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness or weakness in the hand and fingers.

Symptoms may be intermittent at first and can sometimes be more noticeable at night or during repetitive hand and wrist activities. A careful assessment can help establish whether the symptoms are consistent with carpal tunnel syndrome and identify any factors that may be contributing.

Common Symptoms

Common symptoms include tingling or numbness in the hand and fingers, aching around the wrist or hand and symptoms that are worse at night. Some people may also notice weakness, reduced grip or difficulty with fine hand movements.

Possible Causes

Carpal tunnel symptoms occur when pressure increases around the median nerve at the wrist. A number of factors can influence this, and symptoms may sometimes be associated with repetitive hand use, swelling or other health and musculoskeletal factors.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy assessment can help determine whether your symptoms are consistent with irritation of the median nerve and identify factors that may be influencing them. Treatment may include activity advice, movement exercises and other approaches, with referral onwards where appropriate.
