Golfer’s / Tennis Elbow
Golfer’s elbow and tennis elbow are common conditions affecting the tendons around the elbow. Despite their names, you do not need to play either sport to develop them. They can occur after repeated gripping, lifting, manual work, exercise or other activities that place increased demand on the forearm muscles and tendons.
Pain is usually felt around the inside or outside of the elbow and may also affect grip strength or everyday tasks involving the hand and wrist. Understanding which movements are aggravating the area can help guide treatment and support a gradual return to normal activity.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms often include pain or tenderness around either the inner or outer elbow, discomfort when gripping or lifting and pain during movements involving the wrist. Some people also notice reduced grip strength or difficulty with work, hobbies or sport.
Possible Causes
These conditions are usually associated with the forearm tendons becoming sensitive to the demands placed upon them. Repetitive gripping, racquet sports, manual work, weight training or a sudden increase in activity can all contribute.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
Physiotherapy can help identify which activities are aggravating the tendon and develop a progressive rehabilitation programme to improve its ability to tolerate load. Treatment may include advice, exercises and gradual strengthening tailored to your activities and goals.
