Groin Strain
A groin strain is an injury to one or more of the muscles or tendons around the inner thigh and groin. It often occurs during activities involving running, kicking, sudden changes of direction or stretching the leg beyond its usual range.
Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to more significant pain and weakness, depending on the severity of the injury. Because several structures around the hip and groin can produce similar symptoms, an assessment can help identify what is actually involved and guide your recovery.
Common Symptoms
Groin strains commonly cause pain or tenderness along the inner thigh or groin, particularly when running, changing direction, squeezing the legs together or stretching the affected muscles. Some people may also experience weakness or reduced confidence during sport.
Possible Causes
A strain may occur during a sudden forceful movement or when the groin muscles are exposed to more load than they can currently tolerate. Sprinting, kicking and rapid changes of direction are common triggers, particularly in sport.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
Physiotherapy can help establish which tissues are involved and guide a gradual return to movement, strength and sport. Rehabilitation will usually focus on progressively rebuilding the capacity of the affected muscles rather than simply resting until the pain disappears.
