Heel Pain
Heel pain is a common problem and can develop from several different structures around the foot and ankle. It may be felt underneath the heel, around the back of the heel or in nearby tissues.
Symptoms can be linked to changes in activity, loading, footwear or irritation of structures such as the plantar fascia or Achilles tendon. Identifying the exact pattern of symptoms helps distinguish between the different causes and guide treatment.
Common Symptoms
Heel pain may be felt underneath, behind or around the heel and can be particularly noticeable when taking your first steps after rest, walking for longer periods, running or performing higher-impact exercise.
Possible Causes
Possible causes include problems involving the plantar fascia, Achilles tendon or other tissues around the foot and ankle. Changes in activity, training, strength and load can all contribute.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
Physiotherapy can help determine which structures are likely to be producing your symptoms and identify factors contributing to them. Rehabilitation can then gradually rebuild the foot and ankle’s ability to tolerate walking, running or other activity.
