Knee Joint Problems
Knee pain can arise from a wide range of structures within and around the joint, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and the joint itself. Symptoms may develop gradually over time or begin after a specific injury.
Because there are many possible causes of knee pain, the location of the pain alone does not always tell the whole story. Looking at your movement, strength, activity levels and the way the symptoms behave can help build a clearer picture of what may be contributing.
Common Symptoms
Knee problems may cause pain, stiffness, swelling, weakness or difficulty with activities such as walking, running, stairs, squatting or kneeling. Some injuries can also cause feelings of instability, catching or reduced confidence in the joint.
Possible Causes
Knee symptoms can develop following injury, repetitive loading or a change in activity, while some conditions develop more gradually. Muscle strength, training demands, previous injury and changes within the joint may all contribute.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
Physiotherapy can assess the knee alongside your strength and overall movement to understand what may be driving your symptoms. Treatment can then focus on restoring movement and progressively building the strength and capacity required for your daily life or sport.
