Muscle Strains
A muscle strain occurs when muscle fibres are overloaded or stretched beyond what they can comfortably tolerate. Strains are common during sport and exercise but can also happen during everyday movements, lifting or sudden changes in activity.
The severity can vary from mild irritation to a more significant injury. Most muscle strains recover well, but the right progression of movement and strengthening can help restore function and reduce the chance of the problem returning.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms can include localised pain, tenderness, weakness, swelling or discomfort when the affected muscle is stretched or contracted. More significant strains may make normal movement or sport difficult in the early stages.
Possible Causes
Muscle strains often occur during sudden or forceful movements, particularly when a muscle is asked to produce or absorb more force than it is ready for. Sprinting, jumping, lifting and rapid changes of direction are common examples.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
Physiotherapy can assess the severity of the injury and guide you through each stage of recovery. Progressive strengthening and movement can help restore the muscle’s capacity and prepare it for the demands you need it to meet.
