Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain can develop from a number of different structures, including the muscles, tendons and joints around the shoulder. It may begin after an injury, gradually with repeated activity or sometimes without a clear trigger.

Symptoms can affect reaching, lifting, sleeping, work and sport, but shoulder pain does not necessarily mean there is serious damage. A detailed assessment can help identify what movements are sensitive and what may be contributing to the problem.

Common Symptoms

Shoulder symptoms can include pain when raising or reaching with the arm, aching at rest or at night, stiffness, weakness or difficulty with lifting. The location and behaviour of pain can vary depending on the condition.

Possible Causes

Shoulder pain may follow an injury, develop after repetitive or unfamiliar activity or gradually appear as the tissues become sensitive to load. Strength, mobility and the amount or type of activity being performed can all influence symptoms.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy can assess shoulder movement and strength and help establish which activities and positions are most relevant to your symptoms. A progressive exercise programme can then help restore movement, build capacity and support your return to the activities you value.
