Sprained Ankles

An ankle sprain occurs when one or more of the ligaments around the ankle are stretched or injured, usually after the foot twists or rolls unexpectedly. It is a very common injury in sport and everyday life.

Pain, swelling and difficulty putting weight through the ankle are common in the early stages. Although many sprains improve with time, appropriate rehabilitation is important for restoring strength, balance and confidence, particularly if the ankle continues to feel unstable.

Common Symptoms

Common symptoms include pain around the ankle, swelling, bruising and difficulty walking or putting weight through the foot. Some people may also notice stiffness or a feeling of instability as they begin returning to activity.

Possible Causes

Ankle sprains commonly happen when the foot rolls or twists unexpectedly during walking, running, sport or an awkward landing. The force can stretch or injure one or more of the ligaments supporting the ankle.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy can guide the progression from early movement through to strength, balance and higher-level activity. Appropriate rehabilitation can help restore confidence in the ankle and reduce the likelihood of ongoing instability.
