Whiplash
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden movement of the head, most commonly after a road traffic accident, although it can also happen during sport or other impacts. The rapid movement can strain the muscles, joints and other soft tissues around the neck, leading to pain, stiffness and reduced movement.
Symptoms can sometimes appear immediately, but in other cases they develop over the following hours or days. Whiplash can affect people differently, so a thorough assessment is important to understand which structures are involved and how your movement has been affected.
Common Symptoms
Common symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, reduced movement, headaches and tenderness around the neck or shoulders. Some people may also experience discomfort extending into the upper back or arms, or find that certain movements and everyday activities aggravate their symptoms.
Possible Causes
Whiplash is usually associated with a sudden acceleration and deceleration of the head and neck. Road traffic collisions are a common cause, but similar injuries can occur through falls, sporting impacts or other situations where the head is moved forcefully and unexpectedly.
