Hi there, what is physiotherapy/ physical therapy?
Physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of injuries and physical conditions/ diseases, and it included in the medical field. Physiotherapists treat acute and chronic conditions/diseases. So what this means is an injury such as sports injuries, so rolling on your foot and seeing a physiotherapist straight away is known as an acute injury.
Did you know?
Physical Therapists can help with chronic pain too!
Low back pain for the past six years?
Fell on your wrist?
Random elbow pain?
Knee replacement being discussed?
Osteoarthritis?
Arthritis?
A physiotherapist can help!
Physiotherapy branches out into various different roles and specialities; physiotherapy includes respiratory physiotherapy, neurological, musculoskeletal/ orthopaedics, paediatrics which includes children. Physiotherapy also includes learning disability which can help assess and maintain various conditions and issues such as sensory defects, mental stimulation and overall well-being in conjunction with other healthcare professionals such as an occupational therapist, nurse, doctors and full-time carers.
Let's say, for example, a woman just had a baby, and she has pain underneath her lower belly. She wonders who she should see. It has been that way for two weeks since having her baby, Sam. She visits the doctor, the doctor referred her to a women's health physiotherapist, but what she does not know is that she did not need a referral to a Women's Health physiotherapist. The mother can be assessed correctly for her pelvic girdle pain and provided a patient-centred tailored treatment programme to help her pain.
Another example:
If a man has prostate cancer and it has been removed surgically, he may have scar tissue. Men's health physiotherapist specialises in men's health issues. They can provide various treatment, and these patients again do not need a referral to the mental health physiotherapist that they can book an appointment directly. The majority of the public are unaware of these certain specialised areas in physiotherapy, women's health physiotherapy, mental health is your therapy, and oncology/cancer and geriatrics physiotherapy. The majority of people believe physiotherapy just include sports physiotherapy, which should not be underestimated, however more where this is needed and the other specialised areas of physiotherapy. Many physiotherapists do specialise in different areas which are highly sought after, but they are not known until they are needed.
As a registered and qualified physiotherapist, I have a passion for providing information to fellow physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals and also to the public, to bring awareness to the various types of physiotherapy and what physiotherapist can do to help the patients needs, demands and limitations based on evidence-based practice.
Physiotherapy can also provide cognitive support. Psychologist and physiotherapists are the only healthcare professionals that can provide cognitive behavioural therapy, also known as CBT.
Physiotherapy is based on evidence and research. Physiotherapist attends university for 3 to 5 years to study pathologies, diagnostics, assessments, treatments, contraindications, absolute contraindications, physical modalities which are machines that help your recovery of bone tissue ligaments and muscles. After completing 3 to 5 years of the university, during the time physiotherapist students attend supervised work placements in various settings.
It is a profession that is underestimated. It takes commitment, dedication, excellent communication styles, whether that interpersonal or within a group, written and verbal. Physiotherapy is known worldwide. They can also be known as physical therapists.
It is a privilege to work as a physiotherapist, to have the opportunity to meet various different types of people on different types of journeys and to be a part of their recovery or maintenance of their lifestyle.
